Son...

Son,
I’m sorry for the life you’re given.
It’s not perfect nor as much fun;
At times, you may feel alone, alienated even.

Remember, even then,
That it’s not your fault.
People have just forgotten
About humanity and you’re feeling its result.

I’m sorry that one day,
I will no longer be by your side;
No longer holding your hand,
No longer able to give you a piggy back ride.

Yet, I hope these words will stay
With you every day
And that you may
Become a better man than I, in every way.

It’s never easy
To be without family.
So, should you ever find yourself too busy
Remember, family will stand by you in bankruptcy.

Money should not be the reason why
You betray your morals and cause pain.
Money can make it easier when you cry,
But even the richest can’t let you hug me again.

A man’s word is his strongest asset.
Keep it and he is reliable and honest.
Broken and he is deemed lower than a rat.
Remember, son, deliver all that you’ve promised.

Your hands are your strongest tools.
With them, you can build up or make fall.
Never raise them to girls or to fools.
Instead, use them for the good of all.

My pride was always my undoing.
My hope is that you not take after me in life.
There is no shame in backing down or losing.
Also, you know what they say about a happy wife…

Son,
There will be times
When you will get hurt,
But learn to forgive the ‘crimes’.

Pay no heed to those who mean you harm.
Those who love you and appreciate you
Will accept you whole as you are.
So, son, to thine own self be true.
